Our commitment

South Caicos is like no other place in the world.

The responsible stewardship of South Caicos’ magnificent natural resources and rich history is our highest priority. As the land and sea share their marvels with us every day, we're committed to paying back this generosity where we can—thanking the island through continued acts of sustainability.

the power of partnership

There is immense value in partnering with local organisations and non-profits that know the environmental and sociological challenges of South Caicos intimately. We have forged partnerships with the School for Field Studies Center for Marine Resource Studies and FisherFolkFirst to collaborate and develop innovative solutions to these challenges.

UTILISING SOLAR ENERGY

The sun shines on South Caicos approximately 350 days per year, and we will meet more than half of all our energy demands at Salterra by utilising this storm-resilient and reliable form of renewable energy.

COMPOSITING ORGANIC WATER

Discarded food waste, plant cuttings, paper, and other materials are composted in our industrial-grade system, then utilised to increase the water-holding capacity of sandy soils in our landscaping, gardens, and plant nursery.

ELIMINATING SINGLE0USE PLASTICS

We’ve eliminated single-use plastic materials in guest rooms, empowering our guests to be mindful of their plastic waste and water use. All guest rooms are equipped with filtered water dispensers, reusable bottles, and glassware.

WATER CONSERVATION

Fresh water is a scarce and cherished resource, so we collect and desalinate seawater for drinking, repurpose treated wastewater in our landscaping, and harvest rainwater from our rooftops to supplement irrigation.

LANDSCAPING INTEGRITY

Our nursery will grow native, salt-tolerant, and drought-resistant plants and trees that are well-adapted to the conditions of the island. These plants and trees conserve our limited fresh water and are home to beautiful birds and wildlife.

SOUTH CAICOS CORAL REEF CONSORTIUM

Salterra co-founded the South Caicos Coral Reef Consortium in partnership with the School for Field Studies Center for Marine Resource Studies, the Reef Institute, and the Turks and Caicos Reef Fund. Our mission is to research, replant, and restore the coral reefs of South Caicos, improving the adaptability and resilience of our beautiful reefs.

AVIAN CONSERVATION

We have partnered with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and Darwin Plus to fund and advance critical avian conservation research. Our projects thus far include a survey of Reddish Egrets in North, Middle, and East Caicos, and a nationwide census of American Flamingoes.

BONEFISH CONSERVATION

Educating local stakeholders on the immense economic benefit of protecting bonefish populations is integral to bolstering the ecological and economic health of our community. We train and hire local fishermen as bonefish charter guides and captains—building awareness and protecting vulnerable species from overfishing.
